Overtime computer resources always seem to dwindle. Memory and CPU resources are not as optimized as they once were, and the installation and deletion of programs can occasionally leave things running in that background that you may never notice. Not everybody has the time, or knowledge to go through and properly optimize their computer without help, for those of us
LIUtilities has released SpeedUpMyPC.
SpeedUpMyPC is very straightforward, and has a number of features to increase overall system speed and boot up time.
Test System
AMD Athlon XP 2400+
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
512 PC2100 DDR SDRAM
Maxtor 80GB 7200RPM ATA/133 HDD
Free Up RAM
SpeedUpMyPC can help free RAM when needed, and monitor your computer's RAM usage. Two graphs represent the computer's current memory usage. Page file usage keeps track of your computer's "virtual" memory usage, and physical memory usage keeps track of how much physical RAM is being used. A limiter is set on the amount of physical memory is used before the program attempts to recover some. By default, 75% is set, and for our test we chose not to change it. When 75% usage was achieved the program automatically goes into recovery routines and tries to recover as much memory as possible, on its first attempt it was able to recover 16MB, with its second attempt a few minutes later only able to reacquire 16MB. You can also force SpeedUpMyPC to recover memory either through a quick recovery method, or deep recovery method. The deep recovery method takes longer than the quick method, and is usually able to recover a little more memory than the quick method.
Improve CPU Usage
SpeedUpMyPC is able to monitor CPU resources, and assigns CPU resources to the most important tasks first. Just like Windows' task manager, we are again presented with graphs of the computer's current CPU and past CPU usage. We can assign the computer to automatically assign resources to any program currently running, and there is also an option to run a program of your choosing quietly in the background. Most importantly, SpeedUpMyPC can also prioritize system processes once a certain amount of CPU usage is set. Doing this helps to prevent crashes and system hangs preventing a certain program from hijacking your computer's CPU.
