Vantec Heatsink Reviews

posted: September 25, 2001 @ 6:09 EDT by: ryan

VYW has reviewed 2 heatsinks from Vantec. Here's a sniplet from the review:

"The performance of the Vantec 6035 is rather interesting when compared to the Dynatron. With a 38 CFM fan, the Dynatron provides better cooling than the Vantec. But when a 31 CFM Thermaltake fan is used instead, the Vantec outperforms the Dynatron. That makes sense when you compare the density of fins on these two coolers."

Creative Archos Jukebox

posted: September 24, 2001 @ 6:10 EDT by: ryan

RatedPC has posted a review of Archos Jukebox Recorder and Player. This palm sized portable unit has an impressive 6GB hard drive, as well as never before seen recording capabilities. It is able to hold up to 6000 minutes of mp3 music (at 128kbps), and can also be used as a portable external hard drive. It also features analogue/digital inputs and a built in microphone, which enable it to record from almost any audio source and encode them in mp3 format:

"Is the Archos Jukebox A new evolution for music on the go? Without a doubt. With the astounding amount of storage space that it offers, it wouldn't be wrong to call it a portable hard drive with mp3 playback capabilities. Then again, with all-inclusive recording abilities, it is much more than just a portable hard drive or any mp3 player. To top it all off, the good music quality and durability make it very hard not to recommend. Whatever way you look at it, it is the most versatile solution for anyone's mobile audio needs."

Gladiator HSF Review

posted: September 21, 2001 @ 6:00 EDT by: ryan

EXHardware has posted up a review of the Gladiator all-copper heatsink/fan cooler. This copper cooler comes with a 7200rpm fan which should be able to handle just about as much overclocking that you can throw at it. Here's a snip:

"Pure copper coolers have been very popular lately with many models already on the market, some worthy of mention from Thermalright, Vantec and of course the Kanie Hedgehog which started the copper heatsink revolution a few months ago. Copper heatsinks are much better at conducting heat than their aluminium counterparts but at the same time, they weigh a lot more and cost more size-for-size. To satisfy the needs of our overclocking readers and the editor himself, we take a look at the Gladiator heatsink fan which comes in it's all copper glory straight out of Hollywood"

Hitachi CM821F Review

posted: September 21, 2001 @ 5:57 EDT by: ryan

PCStats has posted up a review of the Hitachi CM821F 21 inch Flat Face Monitor:

"Now, if you've just become employee of the month by suggesting your company website start running pop-up ads, why not start off your list of demands with a spiffy new dual input 21" flatface display like the Hitachi CM821F? The 0.214mm dot pitch display features an ErgoFlat Technology Invar Shadow Mask CRT, advanced extended elliptical aperture, multi-step dynamic focus tube, and an anti-static, anti-glare coating. If your boss objects, just tell him/her that it is less expensive than a 21" LCD flatscreen."

Samsung SD-616 16x DVD

posted: September 20, 2001 @ 6:25 EDT by: ryan

Samsung is a little late getting into the 16X DVD ring, but they are not too late. 16X is still the max speed for DVD-ROM's today. This drive is one of the few optical drives I have tested that lives up to its rated speed. IANAG has the review. Here's a quote:

"Today we will be looking at Samsung's SD-616 16x DVD. DVD-ROM's seem to have topped out at 16x. I do not believe I have seen one faster, and 16x DVD-ROM's have been out for well over a year. I have a feeling the reason they have not gone past 16x, is that at that speed the disc is spinning very fast, and if it were to go much faster the vibration would be to great. There are ways of improving speed by using a second laser like Kenwood's line of True-X CD-ROMs do, but since DVD-ROMs are still primarily used to watch movies and not transfer data there is not much of a demand for higher speed DVD-ROMs."

Iomega 24x10x40x Review

posted: September 20, 2001 @ 6:22 EDT by: ryan

HardwareZone has posted up a review of the Iomega 24x10x40x CD-RW. Here's a quote:

"Iomega has done it again. Following the tradition of its previous 12x and 16x CD-RW drives, they have again enlisted Plextor to manufacture their first batch of 24x writers. The Iomega CDRW9600INT-A should score the same full marks as the Plextor PlexWriter PX-W2410TA. The results have shown too, that it deserves that score. Granted, the sub-channel data performance of this drive leaves much to be desired. But that black mark can be erased easily, for the simple fact that you're paying roughly 1/4 lesser for this drive, than the real Plextor PlexWriter. In fact, some shops are offering this Iomega drive for slightly above S$300. Hopefully, a future Iomega firmware update will correct the drive's flaw."

    NetPassage15B Router

    posted: September 18, 2001 @ 3:05 EDT by: ryan

The interest in Internet sharing solutions has increased a lot lately. ICS has been one of the most common solutions even though it puts a lot of load on your computer and requires dual NICs. A better alternative would be using a dedicated router. TweakMax had the opportunity to test the NetPassage15B router from Compex. This router has some unique features like real IP-Forwarding and Parallel Broadband technology, but still doesn't cost a fortune. Here's a quote:

"The NetPassage 15B also has a built in firewall where you can block all network ports you currently aren't using, making it much harder for a hacker to break into your systems. All of the functions and settings are very easy to configure thanks to the web-based interface, making it platform independent.

Another interesting feature of the NetPassage is that it is designed with "Parallel Broadband" technology, making it possible to use an infinite number of routers added to your network with its own Internet connection, providing a virtually combined bandwidth to the Internet.
