Tropico Review

posted: May 28, 2001 @ 10:06 EDT by: ryan

Poptop Software has done it again with their latest sim "Tropico". Being their newest release since Railroad Tycoon, this "Civilization" type of strategy game will certainly strengthen this already this popular genre. This very addictive game is more than about ruling people and resources; moreover, gamers find themselves performing actions beyond the scope of political correctness. Here's a clip from The Game Den's review:

"Tropico is not just about building and moving cargo from point A to point B. You must learn how to control people who do not want to be controlled. How to win elections through various different means and how to control the money necessary to win you the game. Tropico is a game of behind the scenes action where you are watching individual people, planning your crops, hiring the right immigrants and other such detailed work. In the beginning things start to take shape slowly and you can become a bit bored, however this is the time to learn who your opponents could be, plan your islands layout and figure out which industry will lead your people to greatness."

New FIC AD11 Review

posted: May 23, 2001 @ 8:50 EDT by: ryan

T-Break has just published a review of FIC's AMD761 chipset based AD11. Here's a bit from the review:

"Good thing about this board is that it provides excellent means of overclocking by letting you adjust the voltage and clock multiplier- although this is done by means of dip-switched instead of the BIOS. The location of these dip-switches is however, somewhat less than desirable."

Blizzard S370 Copper Heatsink

posted: May 22, 2001 @ 7:03 EDT by: ryan

FrostyTech has posted up a review of the Blizzard S370 Copper Heatsink:

"Like its' brother the S370-L, the Blizzard S370 sports a set of thick copper fins, and a solid copper construction. Armed with a much more powerful Sanyo Denki fan this copper heatsink promises some very sweet performance characteristics.

There are a couple of points which make this model stand out from the S370-L we looked at previously. First off, the S370 is not angled in the manner the other Blizzard was, but rather the fan sits in a pure impingement orientation.

New Abit KT BIOS

posted: May 22, 2001 @ 7:02 EDT by: ryan

Paul and his Abit KT7/KT7A/KT7E have whipped up an unofficial bios for the Abit KT line of motherboards. This bios is based on the latest Abit "ZT" bios but also incorporates the latest Highpoint bios along with an option to disable ACPI in the bios, a trick long learned to help improve stability. Here is a snip:

"Based on the official TY and ZT BIOS releases respectively, each not only includes the new Highpoint 1.11.0402 BIOS release for the HPT370 (RAID) controller but also come with options to enable and disable ACPI in the BIOS and enable/disable Gate A20. ABIT normally remove the ability to disable ACPI in the BIOS in order to earn Microsoft's seal of approval, but it is a popular feature amongst users struggling to achieve stability!"

Skyhawk Aluminum Case

posted: May 22, 2001 @ 7:01 EDT by: ryan

VoidYourWarranty just finished another review
"Most of the case is held together with thumbscrews. The case has removable side panels that are held on by two thumbscrews each. The top of the case is also removable and held on with 2 thumbscrews in the rear of the case...The side panels have no handles or indentions, so they look extremely clean but are a bit more trouble to remove."

CPUfx Core HSF Review

posted: May 21, 2001 @ 4:19 EDT by: ryan

Virtual Hideout has posted another HSF review, this time of the CPUfx Core HSF:

"I found the performance of the Core good but not outstanding as I expected. Looks Marvelous. With the overwhelming size and the CNC Machined perfection Comes with Arctic Silver 2 and shims for both AMD and Intel. Which as far as I know, no other HSF comes with. Figure about $8 per shim and $7 for AS2. Thats pretty good. However comes with no fan. But that gives you option of high speed/high noise Delta, or other high speed (less than Delta)/moderate noise fans. I can't say to buy this, or not to buy this item. This time its all up to you. The price is too big a factor for me to blab my mouth about with these less than perfect temps."

Bungee Pro Mouse Pad

posted: May 21, 2001 @ 4:16 EDT by: ryan

Today Savagezone has reviewed a rather extraordinary mousing surface. Take a look at our conclusion to get a good glimpse of what it is like:

"Glass is awesome and so is the Mouse Bungee Pro. The logo changing idea is great and the main graphic they included is quite nice. The pricing is pretty near to that of other PMS offerings (save the ratpadz). IMHO Hacking off the Bungee would reduce the price and making a better product at the same time, but then again I'm just a crazy wacko. =P"

Elan Vital T10 Case Review

posted: May 21, 2001 @ 4:15 EDT by: ryan

Elan Vital T10 Case review. URL:

"With the T10, Elan Vital has managed to assemble what has to be one of the world's worst cases ever. The odd thing is that on the inside of this horrible case they've included some very cool features.... That's of little comfort however, considering how badly the case has been designed on the outside. H'mm... a case that works well on the inside but is impossible to use. Great - just what we all need!"

Gigabyte GeForce3 Review

posted: May 20, 2001 @ 8:08 EDT by: ryan

AcidHardware have just posted their review of the Gigabyte GF3000D GeForce3 based video card:

"One of the most innovative features the GeForce3 offers is its nfiniteFX engine. The GeForce2/256 GPUs had a set amount of features that developers could use and in my opinion, could not be considered a GPU because of the lack of programmability. The GeForce 3 delivers what developers have been asking for for quite a while now. A fully programmable engine that gives developers the ability to program a virtually infinite number of special effects and custom looks. This in turn gives developers the opportunity to create games and other graphic-intensive applications with more exciting and original visual effects. There are two things that make the nfiniteFX engine what it is, Vertex shaders and Pixel shaders."

E3 Day One Coverage

posted: May 19, 2001 @ 1:35 EDT by: ryan

Maximum3D is out in LA at E3 2001. They just posted their Day 1 coverage:

"One question I needed to know was why the new Athlon4 was released in a mobile format first. Since the new design is offering up to 14% more speed clock for clock when compared with the current Thunderbirds, it seemed like a missed opportunity to kick Intel in the nuts again. We were told that while AMD has been steadily gaining in market share in the desktop segment, their current K6-2/3 mobile processors were not faring as well. From a business sense, they needed to gain a foothold in the lucrative mobile market, and the Athlon4 was the answer."

posted: May 18, 2001 @ 6:33 EDT by: ryan

ViaHardware has just posted their review of the MSI K7T Turbo Limited. This board may be the top KT133A board to get. With features matching that of other popular boards and them some, along with great stability and overclocking options. All of that on a Red PCB to boot. Here is a snip:

"Despite being red, MSI realized that in order for it to sell, it somehow had to distinguish itself from their ordinary K7T Turbo. MSI decided to continue with the red look and developed a jazzed up box and manuals to compliment the board."
