Big Heatsink Roundup

posted: March 2, 2001 @ 9:26 EST by: ryan

PCRoddin has posted up a review containing 6 heat sinks in a roundup. Snippet:

"Heat sinks have been getting great amounts of press lately. Largely, this is due to design fads as well as greater heat removing capacity. With Intel's Pentium 4 not gripping the market and the Pentium III not advancing (Mhz wise), AMD has clearly lead the field with it's processors. Part of this leading role has been to claim and achieve speed king in which increased speed increases the heat production. This makes a great opportunity for companies to enter the market of producing and selling heat sinks. This market of newer heat sinks and the by-products of it is the subject at hand. Today we look at six heat sink and fan (HSF) units, some are easily recognized and there are some less known. Lets begin our first roundup of Socket A HSF's."

PIII to Fade From Desktops

posted: March 2, 2001 @ 7:15 EST by: ryan

Over at C|net they have reported that the PIII will be phased out by the end of this year. Here's a clip:

The opportunity may be there for some speed bumps, but not for the desktop," he said this week at the Intel Developer Forum in San Jose, Calif. "We don't see a big play for our 0.13-micron Pentium IIIs in desktops."

The Pentium III is Intel's best-selling chip.

Intel can't actually stop PC makers from putting Pentium IIIs into desktops. However, the company can take actions to encourage PC makers to put their energy into the Pentium 4. In the past, Intel has accomplished this by not cutting prices or not increasing speeds on the chips it wants to phase out.

Senfu Thermometer Probe

posted: March 1, 2001 @ 5:55 EST by: ryan

AcidHardware has just posted their review of the Senfu Thermometer Probe. If you're looking to purchase a hardware temperature monitor look no further than the Senfu Thermal Probe. Here's a bit:

"The majority of overclockers use some sort of temperature monitoring device. This is because when overclocking your processor, it generates excessive amounts of heat. This has to be closely monitored to ensure that there are no stability problems or heat issues which could result in processor failure. Alot of motherboards now days come with some sort of thermistor, which sits at the underside of the CPU and is monitored by either software (i.e Motherboard Monitor) or through the bios. While this method is sufficient, since the onboard temperature probe is on the underside of the processor it simply cannot get the most accurate measurement because it does not acheive direct contact with the processor die."

posted: February 27, 2001 @ 6:33 EST by: ryan

NeoSeeker has taken a look at Shuttle's AV32 mobo, one of first boards based on the Apollo Pro266 chipset. Here's a short clip:

"The coolest feature on the AV32 is the support for both DDR and SDR SDRAM which is ideal for people who already own PC100 / PC133 RAM. Despite this, having the ability to use either type of SDRAM is extremely useful and will save you a fair chunk of change if you already own SDR SDRAM."

Mouse Skatez Review

posted: February 27, 2001 @ 6:32 EST by: ryan

EXHardware has just posted up a review of the Mouse Skatez. Don't forget to check out our review of the mouse skatez as well:

"What are Mouse Skatez? Well, they're definately not skates that you put under mice to make them skate, rather it's a new product from Everglide and Mouse Skatez that goes over your existing mouse feet and is supposed to improve the glide of the mouse since it's made out of super slippery stuff (so they say :) I wasn't very excited over them at first, since they're some fancy looking tape with a packet of alcohol swabs to clean the underside of your mouse before attaching the Mouse Skatez. Armed with my trusty Razer Boomslang 2000 and fUnc sUrface 1030, it's time to install the Mouse Skatez!"

Thermaltake Volcano II

posted: February 27, 2001 @ 6:31 EST by: ryan

FrostyTech has whipped up a review of the Thermaltake Volcano II:

"This isn't quite what you expect to see when you hear the name Thermaltake, but this square heatsink is indeed one of theirs. The extruded aluminum heatsink fits in the 60mm framework of the socket form factor, remedying problems with other heatsinks that overhang. With a 25mm high fan atop, and a stepped fin array below it looks like one devilishly capable heatsink, but is it really?"

Cyclone 5000 Case Review

posted: February 26, 2001 @ 7:48 EST by: ryan

Overclockers Online reviewed one of the best premodded overclockers cases around: the Cyclone 5000, made by Coolerguys. Snip:

"To see if the case would keep up the good work under full load, I launched an instance of Prime95, a program that really tortures your cpu by using every spare cycle to calculate prime numbers. Once Prime was going, I started my all time favorite FPS game ... yes you guessed it: Quake 3: Arena. After fooling around on the net and killing some mofo's (and of course get my own butt kicked several times), I closed Quake and checked back at the temperatures. I was happy to see that my case temp was only ONE (1) degree above the room temperature."
