Max Cool Case Info

posted: December 1, 2000 @ 6:21 EST by: ryan

The people from thecardcooler.com have released their newest case, the "the max cool" case. Here's a bit of info on the case:

The long awaited and highly anticipated Max Cool Case is finally here. If you have a powerhouse-workhorse system that gets hot, it deserves to be housed in the case that is designed to cool every component to the MAX! This amazing case cooling system uses six fans to move an incredible 355 (no that's not a typo) cubic feet per minute of component cooling air not including the power supply. Say goodbye to the heat that your overclocked components radiate, it is whisked away nearly instantaneously. There are literally NO pockets of "dead air" inside this case.

Pentium 4 Article

posted: November 30, 2000 @ 7:27 EST by: ryan

Glide Underground's Michael Ahlf wrote an opinionated article on Intel's new flagship, the P4. Here's a snippet:

"Wait! Hold on to that phone, Intel. You may be Chipzilla, but the market has changed a lot from the times when FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt) tactics would scare people from buying AMD processors. You're facing what's essentially an even battle right now, and you're doing it with your chips costing a lot of money compared to the competition, for less and less performance advantage as the days go by."

No Voodoo5 in i850 Boards?

posted: November 30, 2000 @ 7:14 EST by: ryan

I read this over at Ace's Hardware:

"I just tried two new i850 boards: MSI's 6339 ATX TH1 and ASUS' P4T. Both boards feature an AGP Pro slot. I was curious about the Pentium 4's gaming performance with a non-T&L board, so we decided to try the Voodoo 5500 AGP. But it was impossible to plug the Voodoo 5500 in the AGP Pro slot, because the necessary second notch was not there."

Recommended System Guide

posted: November 29, 2000 @ 6:33 EST by: ryan

December 1 is just days away, so with that in mind, ArsTechnica has released an update to their Recommended System Guide, all ready for your holiday shopping/begging needs. Here's a snip from the Hot Rod sound card selection, the SB Live! Value:

"Yawn...since Creative bought Aureal there's little competition in the market. Turtle Beach, Guillemot, and a few others are making the move on the sound market but if you're gaming, the Live! is going to be the card for you right now. Especially if you're going for the "Budget" route. If gaming "ain't yo thang" then take a look at that Guillemot Maxi-Sound MUSE, it packs a punch, and can be picked up much cheaper than the Live!"

"The blue PCB had blue heatsinks attached to all of the memory chips (ala Ultra) along with the fan/heatsink combo on the GPU itself. As they say in Roman, it kick'ith major'a ass'eth (ok, maybe I made that up). Those heatsinks sure made it look like overclocking would be fun, fun and more fun.

"One problem that has always plagued the VIA chipsets is memory performance. We showed the importance of Cas 2 and 4-way memory interleaving in our memory tweak guide. Thankfully Transcend was smart enough to include the 4-way memory interleaving option in their bios."

Complexity vs Simplicity

posted: November 26, 2000 @ 8:09 EST by: ryan

Or do you really get into games that have more depth and require a bit more effort on the part of the gamer to play? Two of 3DActionGames' intrepid writers decided to face off on the issue -- Hellchick prefers games that rely solely on action and quick reflexes rather than strategy and tactics, while The Grape is a fan of games with more under the surface.
